School During the COVID-19 Closure

If you are a student you really should access your assignments through Google Classroom.  https://classroom.google.com
It will be a lot easier to follow links and watch videos, however, you need to have a Washington County School District account to be able to access Google Classroom, so for parents and others, here is a list of what we are doing.  First you will find the math info, then scroll down for the science.

You don't have a new math assignment today. Instead I would like you to take a few minutes and assess how things have been going so far. First I would like you to get on www.teacherease.com and check your grades and what you are missing.

I think most (hopefully all) of you have been there to check grades and know how that works. If you have forgotten your login info it is just your school email and the password should be your first and last initial and lunch number (however, you put in your own password but that's the one that I strongly encouraged you to use).

If that doesn't work please email me and I'll get you squared away.

After you check your grades and what is missing I have a few questions that I would like you to answer here at the following link. This is an assignment that will receive points, but it will be way easier than math haha. :)

Make-up Day
Today you do not have a new math assignment. I would like you to check your grades in both math and science on www.teacherease.com and see what you are missing. Then work on getting any missing work done. Also, if you submit work that I have already graded it might be a good idea to shoot me an email so I know to check it. I try to check through old assignments and see if anyone else has turned stuff in, but I could miss something, so If you let me know that you've turned in an old assignment I will be sure to get it checked.

Make-up Day
You do not have a new assignment today.  I would like you to work hard on getting caught up.

(5/12 - 5/14)
We are finished.  Our principal has suggested that we not give any new assignments and that we give the rest of the week to let the students catch up.  Our grades are due on Thursday, so work hard to get as much as you can done by Thursday at Noon.  Then I will finish checking everything and get grades turned in.  For those that are caught up...AWESOME!  Thank you so much for working!

If you don't finish the assignment and need to come back and work on it, you need to submit it, then you will see a link that says edit form. You need to copy and paste that link somewhere so you can come back to it later. If you watch this video to about the 1:25 minute mark you will see what I mean. The main bit is from about 1:15 to 1:25 minute mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqOE_FIMd_w&t=177s

Watch the video
https://youtu.be/E13h1E_Pc00
Then answer the questions on Momentum and Impulse at https://forms.gle/FwMjAnzsFRXvFrtX6

(4/22)
You should have (or should be receiving shortly) your Egg Drop bag.  Your goal is to build a device that you can put your egg in and help it survive a drop.  Over the next two days you are going to learn things that will help you do this successfully.  Today you are learning about crashes and what it takes to survive crashes based on physics.  Your egg will be crashing into the ground and hopefully survive.  Watch the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUpiV2I_IRI
Then there are two questions you need to answer  at https://forms.gle/qF5aYGaoCC6be2YX7

(4/23)
Today I'm going to teach you the physics that will keep your egg safe as you design your ETV (Egg Transport Vehicle). First watch the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YJ44eqMtu8
Next, design your ETV. On a blank piece of paper, draw both a side view and a top view of what your plan is for your ETV. Be sure to label all the things like "rubber bands" or "paper clips" etc. Remember, for your ETV you may only use the things I gave you, as well as tape and/or glue. Once your paper drawing of your ETV is done, take a picture of it and email it to me at robert.comeford@washk12.org. For the subject of the email put ETV. If you are unable to take a picture of it and email it to me, email me anyway and let me know that and we will figure something out.
Take some time and really think about your design. When you actually build it next week I will want you to follow your design. Have Fun!!!

(4/27-4/29)
This week  you will be working on the egg drop project.  Using the materials you were given, create your ETV (egg transport vehicle) to safely get your egg to the ground from a drop.  Try to round up a phone that can take a video of the drop, as well as video of whether your egg survived and a "tour" of your ETV before the drop.  Once the drop is complete, send me the video.  If you cannot get access to a phone to take video, please email me so we can figure something out.

(4/30)
Today you will be writing about your egg drop project.  Your report should be 6 paragraphs. Here is an outline with the topics for each paragraph.
  • Give a general overview of the project.  What did your ETV look like? Why did you make it the way you did? (Try to discuss it in terms of momentum, impulse, and inertia)
  • Discuss the concepts learned/reinforced. (Force, energy, inertia, momentum, impulse)
  • Discuss how you did.
  • Discuss what was difficult.
  • Discuss what you could do to improve.
  • Conclusion including what you have learned makes a “good” egg drop vehicle in terms of the equation Ft=mv (Impulse=change in momentum)
You can use any program/software to write your report, but to turn it in I would like you to just copy and paste it into the body of an email and then email it to me.  (robert.comeford@washk12.org)

(5/4)
PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS FIRST
Today we are going to learn about simple machines and mechanical advantage. Simple machines allow us to do a job and use less force. That comes in handy especially if we do not have enough force to be able to do the job, for example lift something heavy. Perhaps we aren't strong enough to apply enough force to lift a heavy object. A simple machine like a lever, allows us to apply less force to be able to move the heavy object. There is a trade off though. We get to use less force, but we have to apply that force over a greater distance than we normally would. And that is the key that I want you to notice and remember as you learn about simple machines. They allow us to use less force, but the trade off is we have to apply it over a greater distance. Over the next few days you will be learning about simple machines and then using them to build a compound machine. I want you to pay particularly close attention to the force-distance relationship.
THEN
Watch the video on simple machines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvOmaf2GfCY&t=2s and do the video guide found at: https://forms.gle/mcNUdXCnge7JVuAC9
I would suggest if possible to have the video guide open in one window while the video is playing in another window so you can answer the questions as you watch the video. They come straight from the video and go in order of the video. If you cannot have both things open at the same time I would open the video guide first and write down the questions so you can answer them while watching the video. It will be so much easier that way.

(5/5)
Read the handout at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xnNBr8YsfoY_VGPo8FZsmAEbT08-xcDn/view?usp=sharing
